The New England Patriots’ opening season defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs isn’t the only news coming out of Gillette Stadium this week.

In a surprising turn of events, the Patriots have decided to replace their brand new field. The field — which was installed in May of this year — has only seen three games.

According to Mike Reiss of ESPN, some players commented that the new Gillette Stadium surface had been especially soft.

The prior surface — which was FieldTurf’s new premium system — featured the industry’s highest-performing monofilament fiber that makes the surface player-friendly, resilient and durable. Along with the most innovative fiber technology in the industry, this state-of-the-art turf system features FieldTurf’s proprietary heavy infill system, which is critical to performance and playability.

We’ll see how it pans out for their next home game against the Houston Texans on Sept. 24.
